How often should you clean your gutters in South Wales?
Short answer: once a year, in autumn. Long answer: it depends where you are and what's around you.
The minimum: once a year, after leaf-fall
For most homes in Llanelli, Gorseinon, Burry Port and the surrounding SA postcodes, one thorough gutter clean a year is the floor. October to early December is the sweet spot — after most leaves have fallen, before winter storms arrive. Cleaning in summer is too early; you'll get one autumn of leaves and be blocked by January.
When you need twice a year
You probably need two cleans a year if any of these apply:
- Mature trees within 5 metres of the house. Oak, sycamore, lime — they shed continuously through spring and summer too, not just autumn.
- You live within sight of the sea. Coastal properties in Burry Port, Pwll and Pembrey collect gull debris, salt-baked organic matter and grass tufts that build up year-round.
- Heavy moss on the roof. Loose moss sheds down into the gutters in every shower. We see Llwynhendy and Pontarddulais properties block in months because the roof is feeding the gutters.
- Older terraces with shallow falls. Plenty of Victorian terraces in Bigyn and Pemberton have gutters that don't drain well even when clear — they need more attention because tolerance is low.
How to tell yours need doing right now
Look up after heavy rain. If water is overshooting the gutter, drips from the joints, or runs down the wall — they're blocked. Plants growing out of the top is obviously a giveaway. Stains down the wall just below the gutter mean it's been overflowing for a while.
Why not just do it yourself?
You can, on a bungalow. Most insurance policies stop covering you if you fall off a ladder while doing home maintenance, though, so think about that before climbing a two-storey extension. Our ground-vacuum approach means no ladders against your wall — and we send photos so you can see what came out, which a quick ladder-look doesn't give you.
